The city of Cambridge is found in the south eastern part of the region with a population of just over 120,000. Cambridge was formed in 1973 with the amalgamation of the cities of Galt, Preston, Hespeler and Blair. Many local people resisted this amalgamation, considering it a "shotgun marriage" foisted upon them by the Ontario provincial government.
In the first decade of the new millenium The Waterloo area is right up there with the most dynamic and diverse regions of Canada because it has some of the best agricultural land in North America, two highly regarded Universities, a very stable financial sector, numerous manufacturing plants and a flourishing high tech sector anchored in enterprises like Research in Motion and numerous spinoff companies from the University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University.
People settling in the Region will find excellent job opportunities, a diversified cultural life, and schools that are second to none. K-W real estate is also quite a bit less expensive than similar properties in other major cities such as Toronto or Ottawa.
