Generalized Anxiety is More Than Worry

from: Oze Parrot

Generalized Anxiety Disorder, commonly referred to as GAD, is an anxiety disorder distinguished by bouts of enormous worry, apprehension and tension, without any apparent reason for the disturbance. This condition will quite often affect one's physical performance, interfere with a person's concentration and reduce their performance in the work place. There are almost seven million people in America that have been diagnosed with GAD, the condition is more prevalent amongst women.

Generally, people who suffer from generalized anxiety disorder have a gloomy outlook on life, always expecting the worst, and are overly concerned about minor matters. Typical symptoms of GAD include, temperamental behavior, moodiness, lethargy, headaches, body aches and hot flushes. Needless worries include, impending disasters, money, family or health problems that don't exist and being overly concerned about other peoples problems.

People, suffering with generalized anxiety disorder, can't rid their minds of negative thoughts, to them, it appears as though all of life's daily events are fraught with disastrous consequences. Medical studies, have not yet determined the cause of GAD, although there is some indication that the condition may have genetic traits. The condition often begins when a person is young, and develops slowly into a serious anxiety disorder, as the person ages.

Before a complete diagnosis can be determined, a patient must experience a number of symptoms for a period of six months. Symptoms include, needless, uncontrollable worry about common daily events, irritability, tension, irregular sleeping habits, lack of concentration and fear of impending doom.

Treatment for GAD begins after a thorough examination and a positive diagnosis has been made. Therefore, it is crucial for your medical professional to be aware of your exact

symptoms. Treatment, will include both therapy and medication, and will depend on the extent of a person's condition. Keep your doctor informed about your progress or lack of progress so that he can adjust your therapy to suit your personal needs.

If you are a person who is becoming constantly overwhelmed by worry, talk to your doctor immediately, undergo a thorough examination to determine an exact diagnosis, and undertake a course of treatment to alleviate your condition. It is normal practice for people to worry occasionally about various events, but when every day becomes a nightmare of worry and tension, you must seek the necessary treatment that is readily available.
